MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are like the secret agents of the cell. These tiny 22-nucleotide RNA molecules don’t produce proteins or engage in any flashy activities—they simply manage who gets to do what behind the scenes. In 2024, Gary Ruvkun finally received the recognition he deserved, winning the Nobel Prize for his contributions to understanding these little genetic overseers. About time, right?   So, what exactly do miRNAs do? They thrive on drama. Take telomerase, for instance—this enzyme is crucial for maintaining your telomeres (the protective DNA caps at the ends of your chromosomes). Telomeres are like the plastic tips on shoelaces: when they wear down, it’s game over for your cells. They protect important genetic information. MicroRNAs can choose to either support telomerase in keeping cells youthful or allow those caps to deteriorate. Sounds great, except sometimes they get too generous—like when they enable cancer cells to use telomerase to achieve immortality. Thanks a ...

Weather and mood

Growing up in Bangladesh, I faced heat that was simply unbearable—temperatures that made you sweat just by blinking. However, moving to the USA showed me that the cold can be just as harsh, if not worse. I genuinely thought I was ready for winter, but no amount of preparation could brace me for those biting winds and snowstorms. That's when I understood how significantly weather influences my mood. The relentless heat of Bangladesh, for example, left me feeling sluggish and irritable. It turns me into a lethargic mess, almost like a puddle of sweat on the floor. Conversely, when winter arrives in the United States, I experience a different kind of lethargy; the cold completely drains my energy. And it’s not just me. Cold and dark weather can lead to a drop in serotonin levels in the brain, making people more vulnerable to feelings of depression or anxiety. Then there's Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), which is a genuine concern. The absence of sunlight during winter can disru...

Kick to kicks : My journey

Well, as a kid I remember my uncle saadat ali khan saying "You have some moves with your feet kid". I was not sure of what that comment would get me to.  If you told me five years ago that I’d be kicking in *both* Taekwondo and football, I’d have laughed—mostly because I thought I’d be dribbling like Neymar by now. Yet here I am, a certified ninja and football captain, kicking my way through life in every possible sense. My Taekwondo journey started when I was just a kid trying to figure out how to break boards without breaking myself. Five years later, I’m a Black Belt—the youngest in my academy, might I add. I’ve trained people, traveled internationally, and even snagged a gold medal while representing my country. Who knew I’d be kicking *everything* except a football? Speaking of football, when I’m not in a dobok throwing roundhouse kicks, I’m out on the field, channeling my inner Neymar (minus the hair, unfortunately). As the left-wing captain of my school team for five ...

Comeback

the word itself emits power "comeback"- then how do we start this one? its been a while since ive written and i would sure as hell hope my writing quality has improved. Is there a way to measure whether the quality of ur writing has improved? i mean it can be judged on multiple perspective like vocab, sentence structure but i hope there was a way to measure if the writing was more natural and overall sounding more delicate. Anyways we have strayed away from the original topic which was "comeback"- i think the word that sports fans (whether it be e-sports or physical sports) can connect well is "clutch"- "real madrid has clutched it last minute" is a sentence football fans often get to hear cuz they are well known for their comeback technique and they always manage to bring the crowd on the edge of their seats. However, does this term only apply to sports teams? well no because this can also be used in terms of personal acheivements or personal ...

Mental Health during Quarantine

UPDATE THIS WRITING IS FROM MARCH 23, 2021 https://aimanyasar.medium.com/mental-health-effect-during-quarantine-8d6770837c9d There was one of the biggest ground breaking events that occurred in human kind ever, it’s an organism that cannot be seen by human eye. Yes, I am talking about COVID-19 or the newly discovered Corona virus, which was first discovered in Wuhan, China and then slowly spread over to the European countries such as Italy, France, and Spain etc. There is a wrong concept that the virus’s name is Corona virus but it’s actually called COVID-19. The family or group that it comes from is called Corona viruses. SARS is a common example of a Corona virus. This COVID-19 is a respiratory virus that means it affects out respiratory system or the pathway of our breathing system. This virus is mostly vulnerable to old people and people with already serious conditions like kidney failure, tuberculosis etc. But this does not mean that young people or people with no serious conditio...

Equipment's YOU should not live without

Technology equipment's are advancing in a vast and rapid way, making life easier to some people. Some of these technologies will help people starting from  students and teachers doing online classes and to people who are working from home. Apart from working, these equipment's will still help people in daily lives. The first equipment is: 1. iPad and Tablet Charging Stations: If you use tablets or iPads to do classes, and most people do, you understand the time-consuming difficulty of messy cables and of keeping them charged and ready for use every day. Charging stations solve both problems. They hold the devices and have short wires for charging and it is all in one unit. They come in various sizes and some even charge laptops.  A charging station is a safe place to store the devices, and even the youngest students and old teachers understand this. No more searching for iPads that have been left under cushions, on shelves or even on the floor. Some charging s...
